Adulis Review

Standards

Editorial policy

The standards that govern what we publish, how we handle sources, conflicts of interest and pseudonyms, and how anyone can hold us to account.

Last revised

Purpose

Adulis Review exists to improve the accuracy of public information about Eritrea and the Horn of Africa. We do that by checking specific claims against evidence and publishing the result openly. We are not a campaign, and we do not take positions on policy questions.

Independence

Editorial decisions are made by the editors alone. Partners whose statements we publish on the statements page have no say over which claims we check or what we conclude. Statements are clearly labelled as the views of the issuing organisation.

Fairness

  • We apply the same methodology regardless of who made a claim.
  • We publish Accurate verdicts as readily as negative ones.
  • Every outlet named in a fact check is contacted before publication and offered a right of reply.
  • We describe sources neutrally and do not characterise outlets’ motives.

Sources and evidence

We prefer primary, on-the-record evidence. We use anonymous sources only to point us towards evidence that can then be shown to readers; a verdict never rests on an anonymous source alone. Every piece of evidence a verdict relies on is linked as an exhibit.

Pseudonyms

Some contributors write under pseudonyms because of credible risks to their safety or their families. The editors know the identity of every pseudonymous author, and pseudonymous work goes through exactly the same review as any other. Pseudonyms are marked on author pages.

Conflicts of interest

Contributors must disclose to the editors any personal, financial or political interest relevant to a piece. Anyone with such an interest does not work on that fact check.

Corrections

We correct errors promptly and in public. See our corrections policy and log.

Funding

Details of our funding, including any organisation that provides more than 5% of our budget, are published on our about page.
