About
About Adulis Review
An independent fact-checking publication reviewing international media claims about Eritrea and the Horn of Africa against the evidence.
What we do
International coverage of Eritrea and the Horn of Africa is often written at a distance, under deadline, from a small number of sources. Claims are then repeated from outlet to outlet until they are treated as settled fact.
Adulis Review takes those claims one at a time. For each, we quote it exactly, archive the original, trace where it came from and set out the evidence, so readers can judge it for themselves. We also record whether the outlet corrected it.
Why “Adulis”
Adulis was a port on the Red Sea coast of what is now Eritrea. For centuries it linked the kingdom of Aksum to Egypt, Arabia, India and the Mediterranean, and it was known to ancient writers as a place of record, where goods, weights and accounts were checked before they changed hands. Our seal is modelled on Aksumite coinage, which passed through its harbour.
